DEAD ROVER, DEAD ROVER

One gentleman well into his nineties waited until the end of one of our storytelling sessions to relate his experience. After the room had emptied of others, he told us of a strange experience that had begun six years ago and continues to this very day.

He recounted to us that back in 1992, he bought his wife a dog for their fiftieth wedding anniversary. She loved that dog so much he used to tell people he was afraid she loved the dog more than she did him. And anytime he said that in front of other people, she would press down on his knee and say, “Oh, Charles!” It became another little affectionate game in their life together.

Another little game they played involved the dog directly. In the morning, the little dog would eventually try to wake them up. Some days they would hurry and get up and talk to the dog in a way that got him very excited. The dog would run around the house and back to them several times in a rush to start the day. Other times they would ignore the dog. This caused the frustrated canine to attempt more and more outrageous tactics to rouse his humans. His favorite tactic was to bite the sheet hanging off the side of the bed and pull and pull and pull until it came loose from the foot of the bed. The couple would laugh and laugh at the tenacity of their pet and eventually get up, tuck the sheet back in and go on with the day.

But as time eventually defeats us all, the idyllic life of this couple and their furry companion was shattered when the woman fell ill and died in 2003. She was mourned by her family, her church and, most of all, by her faithful husband, who now felt lost, alone and angry.

Life went on, but nothing was ever the same. He said that loneliness and bitterness nearly killed him. He resented every day that started with the awareness that his love was missing from their bed and their home. Oddly, he began to project this anger toward the little dog that had been his gift to her.

Each morning, the dog would faithfully try to wake up his master in his familiar playful way. But now the man would, at best, ignore the animal, and at worst, he began to shove it off the bed or hit it. And sometimes he hit the little dog way too hard.

As his depression grew worse, his abusive behavior toward the dog grew worse, too. He would tease, torment or outright hurt the dog. But dogs love their people unconditionally, and the little fella continued to try to please and engage his master. Each day, he would tug the sheet loose from the foot of the bed, and each day, this act of affection was met with a swift kick that caused a yelp and a quick retreat under the dining room table to hide.
